Free parking in the outdoor lot is available on the east side of the Norton Simon Museum.
What’s in the regular collection at the Norton Simon Museum?
One of my personal favorite nicknames for the Norton Simon is the “coffee mug museum.” The likelihood of seeing the original masterwork of a painting that happens to appear on the side of one of your coffee mugs is quite high at the Norton Simon.
Industrialist Norton Simon (1907-1993) assembled one of the greatest private art collections ever. This impressive spans the work of European masters from the Renaissance to the 20th century. The museum also displays his Southeast Asia art collection which spans over 2,000 years. The Asian art display features many sculpture and stone objects displayed in the cooler and dimmer space in the basement of the museum.
As for the great master painting collection, you will be able to visit, from their 12,000 plus objects, such pieces as Madonna and Child with Book (1502-1503) by Raphael, Women Ironing (1875-1876) by Edgar Degas, Portrait of a Peasant (Patient Escalier) (1888) by Vincent Van Gogh, and Jeanne Hebuterne (1918) by Amedeo Modigliani.
Besides paintings by the masters, there are a variety of other works in other mediums such as Magnolia Blossom (1925), a photograph by Imogen Cunningham and the sculpture Little Dancer (1878-1881) by Edgar Degas.
